From Casa Tonica to Barracca Beach
As pub crawls go, we think this is the very best in the world! Whilst it’s true there are lots of bars and restaurants much closer to the villa (our closest is 5 minutes!) … it only takes around 40 minutes to walk to this stunning beach just south of Javea.
While crowds stream down to the ever-popular Granadella beach, Barracca beach is far less populated – and all the better for it! Beware though, this walk is not a stroll, it’s a proper cross-country trek for the able-bodied, so make sure you take appropriate footwear and water to drink mid-route.
In summer, I would suggest that this route is best enjoyed early morning (you can get there for breakfast!) or early evening – leaving you comfortable enough to enjoy the last sunrays while the water sparkles endlessly ahead of you and the waves lap gently at your feet … ok, so you get the picture.
Setting off from the villa, you head back down to the Portitxol road and almost directly across the road you will see a small country road called Carrer de L’Escorpa. Take this road and keep following it until shortly you will come to some houses and will see the sea in the distance. Follow the path down a little track and at the end you will reach a residential road. Here you would normally turn left and weave your way down to the Cala Blanca, which is our nearest beach. But turn right here and then right again at the top of the road, heading off away from the Montgo (the main mountain in Javea, can’t miss it!) and uphill. You will shortly arrive at the stunning viewpoint ‘Caletes’. Keep heading up the hill and you will arrive back at the Portitxol road (but don’t worry, you’ll be further up!)
There is a small section here where you do need to walk on the road, but there are places/verges where you can tuck yourself in. Very shortly on your left hand side you will come across the Xabia International Collage (the XIC) and a little lane to the left. Take the lane to your left and follow this as it winds it way round and up, with sea views all the way. In approximately a kilometre you’ll arrive at the Portitxol cross and Creu del Portitxol ‘mirador’ – a magnificent viewpoint with delightful views across to Portitxol island.
From here the route is really easy because it’s all signposted to ‘Cala Barraca’. The path is a wooded trail, and although there are steep sections, it’s all really well laid out and simple to follow. The views on the route are simply superb!
It’s not long before you have Barraca beach within your site … and the tempting terrace of the bar, Cala Clemence, beckoning you!
